"Safe Zones and Shifting Timelines" is an interdisciplinary series of events that explores the fragile relationship between institutional archives and knowledge, collective memory, and changing political situations in the Baltic region.

Combining discussion-based workshops and artistic interventions, the series invites participants to reconsider how archives and their various forms serve as “safe zones” for preserving historical knowledge, while also being subject to uncertainty, reinterpretation, and institutional challenges in political, social, and economic contexts.

During Riga Art Week, visitors will have a chance to view two artists’ interventions in the LCCA archive and library at Albert Street 13 - a series of drawings by Luīze Rukšāne and an installation by Rūdolfs Štamers.  In June, a video work by Sabīne Šnē will join the existing set of artists’ works. The exhibition will be on view until September 30.

About the gallery

The Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art (LCCA) is an NGO that has been supporting contemporary art events in Latvia since 2000, approaching social processes critically and creatively.   The LCCA organises art events and exhibitions, conducts research and education projects, and produces publications addressing the latest developments in art and society while exploring their historical contexts.   Cooperation with local and international artists and institutions is of special importance to the LCCA, and this is reflected in the nomadic nature of its activities. Exhibitions, educational programs, and other events take place in a variety of venues, including museums, schools, libraries, abandoned buildings, and urban spaces.  Since 2009 LCCA organises the annual international contemporary art festival Survival Kit - one of the most significant contemporary art events in the Baltics.
