As part of the contemporary art festival Riga Art Week (RAW) programm, Art Academy of Latvia students Valdis Putniņš and Laura Ozola will create a glass mosaic inspired by Valdis Putniņš’ solo exhibition “Covenant”, currently on view at Grand Poet Hotel, and by the glass artworks exhibited there. During the masterclass, the artists will collaboratively create a minimalist composition in golden tones, choosing the banana as the central image - functioning simultaneously as an ironic, poetic, and existential allegory. Today, its meanings are interpreted within the contexts of pop culture, art, politics, and ecological discourse, both globally and within the local cultural environment. The process of creating a mosaic is slow and demands artisanal craftsmanship. In contrast to the fast-paced digital environment, where images become temporary and rapidly consumed, glass mosaic emphasizes materiality, presence, and the value of time in the making of art.
